The Royal Horticultural Society’s level 2 qualification is internationally recognised and widely respected in the horticulture industry.
- If you are a career changer this is the qualification for you.
- If you are a keen amateur gardener this is the qualification for you.
- If you are working in the industry but have no formal qualifications in horticulture this is the qualification for you.
What does Level 2 mean?
Level 2 is equivalent to O’ level grades A – C or GCSE grades 4 – 9 or A*- C in England and Wales and Northern Ireland. It is equivalent to national level 5 in Scotland.
Is it very theoretical or practical?
Horticulturalists tend to be very hands-on as that is the nature of the profession. The RHS provides a level 2 practical course and a level 2 theory course. Leafy Learning only runs the theory course and does not run the practical course as the practical course must be studied face to face at a college. Our distance learning course is predominantly focused on theory rather than hands-on practical application so will appeal to some more than others
The RHS Level 2 qualification has recently been updated.
The level 2 qualification content and structure has changed from September 2022. The theoretical element is now divided into Units 1 and 2. The last exam for the old syllabus was in February 2024
How am I tested?
Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth and Development. (New syllabus. From Sept 2022. Theory / Principles)
Exams are taken at set times during the year in February, June and October. You apply to take exams for unit 1 or unit 2. Dates for exams can be found on the RHS website:
Exams are taken online if you are distance learning, or at your education centre as a written exam where you are studying. If you are a distance learner and are not studying at an education centre you must take the exam online. You can no longer take exams at a centre as an external candidate.
Certificate in Practical Horticulture
Leafy Learning does not run the practical qualification. This is studied face to face at a college of your choice.
