Best study videos for RHS Level 2 Study R2111-R2114 (old syllabus) and Unit 1 Topic 4 Plant specification.

I sit down to find a video on planting up hanging baskets to back up the written notes we have studied. Two hours later I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.

There are lots of great videos on the internet and lots of bad ones too. Some are great for 90% of the time and then they say something I believe is totally wrong so then it’s a case of reject, and on to the next. I love to show a video to students. For one thing it’s good to listen to someone else’s opinion or way of doing something or just someone else full stop. It also gives me a little pause and time to get ready for the next section of the lesson. But the price I pay for this little pause is sometimes 2 hours research.

Videos are useful, especially for evening classes when it is dark outside. Much of the learning for the RHS Certificate in the principles of horticulture is classroom based because there may not be relevant site facilities available, enough time or daylight to go outside and demonstrate or show something in person.

I have chosen these videos for the following reasons:

  • They are informative and relevant to the syllabus.
  • They sometimes make you smile due to the way they are presented (please if you are in any of these videos I really do appreciate the time and effort taken to make them)
  • I couldn’t find a decent video so I made one myself – so you can laugh at that one too.
  • I have chosen just 1 or 2 recommended videos for each module R2111-R2114

Understanding garden features, plant selection and planning

How to measure the garden and plot it to scale. This video explains the main measuring techniques with diagrams and examples.

I have written a blog with more detailed descriptions of the different measuring techniques for this module so I would read this first to focus your mind on the learning outcomes for the exam.

Understanding the choice, establishment and maintenance of garden plants and lawns

How to sow hardy annuals in a border. When the page opens, scroll down and the video is half way down the page. Shows two different ways of sowing hardy annuals.

2 videos showing how to plant up a hanging basket using different liners and plants for Summer and Winter display. Love these presenters. The second guy obviously has to plant his basket in quick time.

Understanding the production of outdoor vegetables and fruit

Winter pruning of fruit trees with garden ninja who has many other informative videos on his YouTube channel.

Planting and initial pruning of blackcurrants. Remember these are planted deep.

Successional cropping of carrots. Ways to stagger the harvest over the growing season so that everything does not crop at the same time.

Understanding protected environments and their use in plant cultivation

This video shows commercial production of cut flower, chrysanthemum.

This shows you how to pot on houseplants with good explanation, hints and tips.

I hope this has been helpful. There is another post which shows videos suitable for the other modules in the old syllabus.
